Everything You Need to Start Your Own Blueberry Patch.

This workshop is for anyone who would like to grow a vibrant patch of blueberries in their backyard.

Emily Round, ifarm’s head gardener, will be teaching participants her methods for growing abundant organic blueberries. Participants will learn how to plant a patch of blueberries that will require low maintenance, grow larger each year, and (once established) produce abundant blueberry harvests each year.

ifarm will provide you with two highbush blueberry bushes (a $35 value) that will grow to 4-6 feet tall and bear a good harvest of berries once established. We will provide one Patriot variety, which bears fruit in the early season, and one Bluecrop variety, which bears in the mid-season, so you have berries for much of the summer! Blueberry bushes take 3-4 years to become fully established. You can expect a small harvest the first year after planting, with an abundant harvest 3-4 years after planting.

Topics covered will include:

  • How to choose an exceptional blueberry bed location (simple tools to assess soil, sunlight etc.)
  • Where to source extra blueberry bushes for planting
  • How to easily plant and care for a blueberry patch
  • Common blueberry gardening mistakes
  • How to prune blueberries
  • Soil amendments to make a good home for your blueberries
  • Harvesting strategies to ensure bumper crops
  • Dealing with pests and diseases
  • Preparing your bed for winter

If you have ever wanted your own summer blueberry patch, this is the workshop for you! Participants will be able to create and plant their 2019 blueberry patch with just a few hours of work outside of class. It will require minimal care to provide blueberry harvests that will increase each year, as the patch become established.

This is a hands-on class with demonstrations: Please come dressed to work with plants and soil, and prepared to be in a greenhouse or outdoors. ifarm will provide gardening gloves to all participants.

In the case of cancellation and rescheduling due to weather, we will send out an email to all registrants at least 12 hours before the event. You can read about our cancellation policy here.
